[Observed nuptial display of Réal's Wood White on towpath of Grand Canal but female flew away suggesting an earlier mating. No wing flapping seen during male's display which lasted about 2 minutes. Wing flapping during the male's courtship is reported as a way of distinguishing this species from the Wood White (Leptidea sinapis)].

[The holly blue flew around my garden before obligingly settling on ivy for identification. Beautiful warm sunny day. Seen @ 1.45pm. Second sighting 45 minutes later flying in the opposite direction. Same one ?]

The previous earliest record appears to be 7 March 2005 @ Shanganagh, Dublin (Frank Ryan). There are a number of other records from 14-17th March in several years.

The sites (13, 16, 17, 19, 21 Feb.) were known to have strong MF colonies. Feb 13 was the first day they were checked in 2011. All were clusters of small post-hibernation black larvae on south facing banks or clumps of dry Purple Moorgrass. In a few cases traces of weak webs were to be seen but in most instances there were no obvious webs. BA
